Hi. I’m Harrison
At the time of writing this, I have finished my undergrad degree at Becker College and started my Masters of Fine Arts (MFA). For the past 4 years I have been exploring my love of Gaming and Game Development. I have found plenty of successes and made just as many mistakes, but I wouldn’t trade any of them for the world. We are nothing but the product of our experience. Good or bad. Looking back on my experience, there are some that stand out.
Let me share them with you.
When I was but a young lad, I got a Nintendo Game Boy Advance. I had hardly played a game without my dad at that point, so having my own Game Boy was quite exciting for me. That night we went to dinner at the Sole Proprietor in Worcester Massachusetts. When we walked in the waiter saw the Game Boy in my hand. He offered me a free game that had been left by another young gamer like myself many days ago. Me in my infinite child wisdom accepted his offer of free video games. That game was Pokemon Ruby.
And it was the first game I finished by myself.
During middle school I saved up for an Xbox 360 and got Halo Reach along with it. I loved that game and spent as many weekends as I could playing it. The multiplayer was not the main draw for me however. It was Reach’s forge mode where I had complete control over the world around me to build whatever I wanted. I made bases, 1v1 maps, Big Team Battle maps and so many others. At this point in my life I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Until one night when I was browsing YouTube and came across some stellar animation video. I was impressed by what I saw but was quickly saddened. I didn’t have any skills that I could make a career out of. That was the night that I downloaded Unity for the first time.
The night I decided I wanted to be a Game Developer
In the beginning of high school I played Soccer, Basketball and Ultimate Frisbee in the afternoons. I wasn’t particularly good at any of them so at the end of my Freshman year, I dropped Soccer and Basketball to try out Technical Theater. My sister had been an Actor for years before me so I was excited to see what it was all about. It was quite intimidating at first and I wasn’t sure if it was something I would stick with. But as we grew closer and closer to opening night, our group of techs became closer and closer. We did our first night of shows and I decided that I wanted to continue Theater for the rest of my time in high school. Over the next school year, I rose through the ranks of theater and became the Stage Manager. I orchestrated the shows sound effects, lighting and projections. And I loved every minute of it. My time as a Stage Manager taught me that putting on a show requires so much more than what the audience will see. And only through working together, can the doors open on time.
And now we are here
Looking down the barrel of my last two semesters at Becker College. Aiming high to become the best I can be. My main goal in life is to be remembered. I want to help people set aside their hardships, even for a little while. I hope that the games I make can help others, just as games have helped me.
